Six clubs interested in Burnley winger Dwight McNeil as West Ham make their first move

West Ham United have reportedly enquired about the availability of Burnley winger Dwight McNeil this summer.

McNeil saw his side relegated on the last day of the season following a 2-1 defeat to Newcastle United. An integral part of the Burnley squad, McNeil featured in all 38 league games for the Clarets last season. Now, the 22-year-old may get a second chance inside the top-flight, with West Ham interested in his signature.

That’s according to 90Min, who claim that West Ham have already expressed their interest in landing McNeil this summer.

Discussions have begun internally regarding the future of McNeil at Turf Moor. Following their relegation, there is uncertainty the club will be able to keep hold of him.

With West Ham already making their first move, there are also a number of other top-flight clubs considering a bid.

The report suggests that Tottenham, Brentford, Everton, Newcastle and Fulham are all interested in the young Englishman.

That being said, his interest is somewhat surprising given his stats from the previous season.

In the 2021/22 campaign, McNeil failed to score a single Premier League goal, and also managed to register just one assist. As a whole Burnley suffered a disastrous season, but individually McNeil will also be disappointed with these numbers.

The former England U-21 has proven in the past that he can compete at the top. In the 2020/21 season, he registered seven goal contributions from 36 league appearances.

With West Ham desperate to bolster their attack, it would be no surprise to see them make a move for McNeil.

And following Burnley’s relegation, the Hammers will be hopeful they can land the start on a cut-price deal.

Newcastle also enquire about Dwight McNeil

Newcastle United are another club to have enquired about McNeil.

Also desperate to improve their attacking options, McNeil could add some much-needed cover on the wing.

In a 4-3-3 formation under Eddie Howe, McNeil would offer cover for the likes of Allan Saint-Maximin and Miguel Almiron.

However, having started 35 of the 38 league games at Burnley last season, McNeil may struggle to adjust to such strong squad competition.

A move to Fulham or Brentford would see his chances of starting in the top-flight next season improved.

Whether either of these clubs will follow suit and enquire themselves remains to be seen.
