Ian Maatsen is going to join Burnley in the Championship this season, after a couple of strong spells in that division.
We thought he might be ready for the Premier League at this point, and we were rather hopeful he could end up being Ben Chilwell’s backup for the season.
But in the end it looks like his fate is another temporary spell in the second flight. This time he will be playing at Burnley, one of the favourites to win the division.
Burnley agree deal with Chelsea to sign Ian Maatsen on season-long loan. Paperwork needs finalising but Dutch U21 int’l set for medical Thurs & if all ok move should be done by weekend. Kompany wants 20yo at left-back @TheAthleticUK #twitterclarets #CFC https://t.co/1cIqb8foa6

That’s disappointing, especially given the other news tonight, about Levi Colwill likely leaving. The club continue to slough off their youth players once they reach the age they’re ready to play in the first team.
We were already interested in how Burnley would get on this season, after they appointed former Manchester City icon Vincent Kompany after their relegation this season.
Now we will have another reason to watch them.
