The Reds got their preparations for the 2022/23 season off to a slow start on Tuesday with a 4-0 defeat to Manchester United. While they had golden chances and should have scored, there were obvious improvements to be made.
And as the scoreline suggests, it was not only in attack where Jurgen Klopp had to get his players back on track.
As such, the 2-0 win over Palace will come as a boost to Liverpool, who dominated proceedings in Singapore.
Liverpool gave away a couple of free-kicks early on, with the battle between Kostas Tsimikas and Jordan Ayew one to watch.
At the other end, the Reds were looking to be more clinical. After only 12 minutes against Palace, it was captain Jordan Henderson who stepped up.
From a Palace corner, James Milner sent Harvey Elliott away on the right flank. The teenager cut in from the byline, with Henderson striking the ball first time into the far corner.
Elliott, Henderson, Milner and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain were all lively throughout the first half. Left-back Tsimikas was also influential in attack, but Roberto Firmino headed his cross wide.
Palace also impressed at times in attack – especially on the counter-attack – but could not find a clinical edge. Luka Milivojevic arced in a corner, but Joachim Andersen’s effort was off target.
In a fresh injury blow for Liverpool after Diogo Jota’s hamstring problem, Oxlade-Chamberlain limped off just before half time.
Youngster Leighton Clarkson replaced him ahead of a further raft of changes at the interval, with Clarkson retreating more or less straight away.
Salah puts Liverpool two up
Mohamed Salah, fresh from his new contract, was one of those to come on at the break.
And the Egyptian scored after only two minutes on the pitch, cutting inside before one of his trademark curling shots received a helpful deflection.
Salah then combined with Darwin Nunez, but Vicente Guaiata comfortably saved the new Reds signing’s shot.
Ayew remained a threat for Palace at the other end. Virgil van Dijk could not fully clear a cross and the striker pounced before having his shot blocked.
Palace made 10 changes after 75 minutes, bringing on a host of youth talents such as Jadan Raymond.
Liverpool responded four minutes later, with youngsters like James Norris getting a cameo.
Palace could not find a way back into the game, but Liverpool could not extend their advantage either.
It was nevertheless another solid run-out for both teams as they look ahead to the new season. And these two teams will meet again shortly in the Premier League on August 15.
