Manchester United are monitoring RB Salzburg striker Benjamin Sesko, according to reports.
Finding a new centre-forward is something Manchester United have been thinking about recently. They bid farewell to Edinson Cavani at the end of last season when his contract expired. Furthermore, there are doubts as to whether Cristiano Ronaldo will stay with them without Champions League football.
Even if Ronaldo remains, the club will have to look to the long-term at some point soon. Therefore, they will be keeping their options open when it comes to younger striker successors.
According to Fabrizio Romano, one player they have their eyes on is Benjamin Sesko. The Slovenia international completed his first full season with RB Salzburg in 2021-22 after previously developing with their feeder team FC Liefering.
Last season, Sesko scored 11 goals from 37 appearances in all competitions. The Austrian 2022-23 campaign is already underway and the 19-year-old has found the net in both of his appearances so far.
Establishing himself as one for the future, Sesko has emerged onto the radar of several clubs in bigger leagues than the Austrian Bundesliga. For example, in the Premier League, he has drawn links with the likes of Newcastle, Tottenham and Liverpool.
According to Romano, Manchester United are now in contention for Sesko’s signature as well. They are reportedly “well informed” about him, but there is no kind of advanced deal.
Romano reiterates that Newcastle are keeping track of Sesko closely as well.
Elsewhere, the Daily Express confirm there has been no formal approach from Man Utd. Furthermore, Salzburg sources have told the tabloid that they are not considering selling Sesko this summer.
Expect to see more of Benjamin Sesko
They still have the 1.94m forward on the books until 2026. They may not be able to keep him for all that time, but are hoping to increase his prominence further over the course of the 2022-23 season.
In the future, there is every chance he could move on for better things. The Express relay that his agent has been talking to clubs across Europe – including Newcastle and AC Milan – for what may come further down the line.
While a Premier League move may have to wait for Sesko, he could be the subject of a high-profile switch in the future.
Still a teenager, he has been showing his potential in Austria. Several other top talents have come through the ranks at Salzburg to earn a chance in the Premier League, such as former Liverpool star Sadio Mane or Manchester City new boy Erling Haaland.
Whether Sesko can hit those heights remains to be seen. But if his agent is informing clubs about him, they will no doubt be keeping track of him.
If he keeps up the way he has started the current season, he has every chance of attracting more transfer gossip in the months and years to come.
