Manchester United or Manchester City could snare Serge Gnabry from Bayern Munich, according to a report, although Chelsea’s chase for him is under serious threat.
Gnabry is facing an uncertain future at Bayern after entering the final 12 months of his contract there. The German titans want to sort a renewal, although Gnabry could be tempted by the offer of a new challenge.
A recent report from The Telegraph put Chelsea on the winger’s trail. Chelsea have been left disappointed by Raphinha’s decision to join Barcelona over them and will now pursue Germany international Gnabry instead.
This link coincides with rumours about Hakim Ziyech leaving Stamford Bridge. AC Milan are in talks with Chelsea about his availability, so Gnabry may need to be brought in to bolster Thomas Tuchel’s winger ranks.
However, it appears their hopes of landing the 26-year-old may have hit a snag. The Daily Mail, who cite German source Bild, claim Gnabry has little interest in joining Chelsea.
This is because of his close ties with Arsenal. He doesn’t want to tarnish his reputation with the Gunners by signing for one of their biggest rivals in London.
Gnabry made 18 appearances for Arsenal, registering one goal and two assists. Despite his lack of action at the Emirates, Gnabry has fond memories of his time there after signing as a teenager.
There have been murmurs of a potential Arsenal return. But the Daily Mail reveal two alternative Premier League destinations for the attacker.
Both Manchester clubs on Serge Gnabry trail
Manchester United and Manchester City are both admirers of Gnabry and could move for him if a Bayern exit becomes a possibility.
United in particular are happy to pay £35m to land the 34-cap international. This seems like a surprisingly low figure, but Bayern cannot demand much more than this due to his contract running down.
City, meanwhile, could use some of the Raheem Sterling funds to land Gnabry. Sterling is set to link up with Chelsea for an initial £45m in the next few days.
In terms of interest from abroad, Real Madrid are joining United and City in keeping tabs on Gnabry’s situation. Of course, they would pose a massive threat if Gnabry did opt to leave Bayern.
It would be exciting to see Gnabry return to the Premier League. He has become a world-class winger in Germany since leaving Arsenal for Werder Bremen in 2016.
He is a serial winner who would definitely improve either United or City’s wide attacking options. But there are a couple of significant hurdles they need to overcome.
The first is Bayern, who will likely offer Gnabry a handsome wage packet to renew his contract.
The second is Real, who might go all out for Gnabry if he becomes available on the transfer market.
Meanwhile, Tuesday’s Transfer Gossip reveals United have set a deadline to complete the signing of Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona.
