Manchester City are reportedly nearing the signing of Anderlecht left-back Sergio Gomez, though they may stray from their original plan.
City have been one of the quieter teams in the Premier League in terms of the volume of additions this summer. Erling Haaland, Kalvin Phillips and Stefan Ortega are the three permanent signings they have made.
The former hit the ground running in his debut, notching two goals against West Ham on the Premier League’s opening day.
Indeed, the forward seems to be a very good addition to an already excellent side. Although, City would have hoped to have made another big signing this window.
Pep Guardiola’s side were tracking Brighton star Marc Cucurella, but refused to go higher than £40million. That left Chelsea free to snap up the Spaniard, in a deal worth nearly £60million.
City have since looked elsewhere to bring in a new left-back, tracking Anderlecht youngster Gomez. While their initial offer was reported to have been turned down, City have persisted.
Their efforts appear to have paid off, too. According to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, the Citizens are closing in on a deal with Anderlecht for the full-back.
The fee they will have to pay is reportedly in excess of €10million (£8.45million).
Romano also reports that City’s original plan was to send Gomez out on loan to Girona.
However, it seems as if they are now considering keeping him in the squad, following the signing.
Sergio Gomez deal appears good business
The deal to take Gomez to the Etihad seems a good one from City. Indeed, their depth in the left-back position has suffered thanks to the sale of Oleksandr Zinchenko to Arsenal.
Adding Cucurella into the mix would, of course, have eased those issues, but it is not hard to see why they did not want to spend huge money on a player who is likely to be a back up to Joao Cancelo.
As such, settling for a much cheaper option, who will likely fulfil the same role, seems a much better option.
What’s more, Gomez can play as a midfielder as well as a defender, so could be a useful asset in a number of positions.
