Manchester United are reportedly closing in on signing Atletico Madrid striker Matheus Cunha for a fee in the region of £42million.
The Red Devils are reeling after suffering back-to-back losses at the start of the Premier League season to leave the bottom of the table and facing ridicule from pundits and former players alike.
United legend Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher were highly critical of the club’s transfer business before the Monday Night Football, but it looks like they are ready to spend relatively big again to bring in Cunha.
The Red Devils had been linked with a move Alvaro Morata but it appears they’ve switched to Cunha instead, as reported by talkSPORT.
The Brazil international joined Atletico in 2021 and has scored just seven goals in 37 games for the clubs.
It’s understood there is no swap deal involved with Cristiano Ronaldo, as has previously been mooted.
The Portuguese forward remains keen on an exit due to his desire to play in the Champions League.
Cunha arrival set to spark Ronaldo exit
The report adds that Erik ten Hag is now willing to sell Ronaldo, as long a replacement is brought in. And it would appear that Cunha is the man.
Cunha joined Atletico only last summer for an initial fee of around £22million.
He previously spent three seasons in the Bundesliga with Hertha Berlin, where he scored 13 goals in 40 games.
Cunha appeared as a late substitute for Atletico in Monday’s LaLiga clash with Getafe. Morata actually started that game and scored twice in a 3-0 win.
That could well end up being his last appearance for the club. Talks between United and Atletico are said to be at an advanced stage over a deal.
