Manchester United have reportedly ramped up their interest in signing young Brazilian midfielder Joao Gomes before the transfer window closes.

United’s interest in the Flamengo star was first reported a few months ago, when it was claimed that Old Trafford transfer chiefs were willing to pay £32million to get the player on board.

Since then, Gomes himself has admitted he actually favours a move to Premier League rivals Liverpool.

Taking part in a live-streaming event on Instagram, the 21-year-old revealed his wish to join Jurgen Klopp’s men.

“Liverpool are a team I’d play for. I have the greatest desire to play,” said Gomes (via ESPN Brasil).

“Playing in the Champions League is my biggest dream and that of my family, my biggest dream in football.”

Sadly for Gomes, there has been no mention of the Reds actually showing an interest in his services.

That, in turn, leaves the door open for United to strike, with journalist Julio Miguel Neto giving an update on the situation.

He confirmed on Youtube that United want the youngster to bolster their ranks, having lost midfielders Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic, Juan Mata, Jesse Lingard and Andreas Pereira this summer.

It’s claimed that the Red Devils have sent scouts to Rio again to watch Gomes in action. An official approach is then likely to follow.

Neto adds that Flamengo president Marcos Braz has been hinting that Gomes could still leave this summer. That is largely down to the Brazilian club failing to tie him to a new contract.

United are not the only club showing an interest, however, with Benfica and Atletico Madrid also keen.

Midfield upgrades a must for United

It’s fair to say that after watching United’s home humbling by Brighton their engine room needs a significant upgrade.

Both Scott McTominay and Fred were roundly criticised for their performances in that game. To that end, it’s no surprise to see why Ten Hag has been chasing Frenkie de Jong and is also hoping to push through a deal for Adrien Rabiot.

Graham Potter’s men had control of that area of the pitch last weekend, with names far less lauded. And that also happened against other sides all too often last season.

Right now, as the clock ticks down on the window closing, midfield help is an absolute must – and while Gomes may take some time to bed in, all reports over his qualities suggest that he could prove to eventually be a steal of a signing.
