Kieran Maguire: Newcastle United to emulate Sunderland after overseas development

Newcastle United could star in a documentary series in order to boost their popularity overseas.

That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Magpies’ plans to expand their footprint in Australia and America.

CEO Darren Eales identified both territories as key growth markets for Newcastle in their bid to become a commercial juggernaut, as quoted by The i earlier this month (7 October).

Many clubs fly to the English-speaking countries for lucrative pre-season tours, and Newcastle are unlikely to travel to their Saudi owners’ homeland because of the searing temperatures there in the summer.

Commercial income will be vital as the Tynesiders look to improve their revenue and thereby their spending power under the terms of Financial Fair Play.

Maguire claims that one way to generate a buzz in Australia and America is to star in a docuseries, just like rivals Sunderland.

The owners have seen the popularity of Sunderland Til’ I die, Welcome to Wrexham and the All or Nothing documentaries,” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

I am sure that they will feel that Newcastle have the right sort of history and heritage. There is also the central role that the club itself plays as a landmark in the city.

They’ll think these factors will make it perfect for a docuseries.

“On the back of that, they will attract interest overseas, especially from America and Australia where the likes of Netflix and Amazon have substantial subscriber numbers.
