Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek is yet to make a firm decision over his future – but will likely push to leave Old Trafford in January should his situation not improve.
The 25-year-old midfielder has endured a miserable time at Old Trafford since an initial £35m move from Ajax in summer 2020. The Dutchman has made 53 appearances for the club so far, though has never been considered a regular. As such, Van de Beek was allowed to leave on loan to Everton in the back half of last season.
Now back at Old Trafford, he will have hoped the appointment of his former mentor Erik ten Hag would have had a positive impact on him. And while he’s featured three times in the Premier League so far, he has only amassed 19 minutes of action in all competitions.
Clearly that is not enough for a player of his standing. And with his place in the Netherlands’ World Cup squad also hanging by a thread, it is a situation that will soon come to a head.
As such, speculation of late has suggested Van de Beek is in line for a January transfer away from Old Trafford. To that end, Leicester City are reportedly plotting a move for the Dutchman that would allow Youri Tielemans the chance to move away.
A swap deal with Inter Milan involving one of their star men is also being mooted.
Shedding light on the midfielder’s future, trusted transfer guru Fabrizio Romano insists no decision has been made yet on his future.
However, Van de Beek seems certain to ask Ten Hag to let him leave in January if his situation does not improve. As it stands, though, he still believes he can make an impact at Old Trafford

Providing an telling update on Van de Beek’s future, Romano provided Caught Offside with the latest developements.
“There’s no decision on his future as it depends on the next two months for Van de Beek. For sure, he wants to play and so we have to follow the situation because it could change in January,” Romano explained.
“I think it’s an open situation for January market, it depends on if Ten Hag ends up using him more, and if Donny is happy with his role, of course.”
As such, the next few weeks will likely give Van de Beek a solid understanding of where he ranks in Ten Hag’s thinking.
United face a busy period of eight more games before the month of October is even out. First up, is a Europa League match against Cypriot side Omonia Nicossia on Thursday.
To that end, he will certainly hope to get much more game-time under his belt.
But with his career stagnating fast, something will need to change in January. And if he is not figuring more, Van de Beek may pay the ultimately price of losing his Netherlands place for the World Cup.
