Noel Whelan has insisted he is “very sure” Pep Guardiola will renew his Man City contract “as soon as possible”.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the “relationships” between the 51-year-old, his players, and the City chiefs are “too strong” to abandon.
Guardiola’s Man City contract is set to expire at the end of the season.
As quoted by the Daily Mail (5 August), the Spaniard has previously opened the door to “staying longer” at the club but no update on negotiations has been forthcoming.
Guardiola has won four Premier League titles, one FA Cup, and four League Cups during his six-year spell at the Etihad Stadium.
Whelan claimed the former Barcelona boss has “settled in Manchester” with “one of the best teams in the world”.
When asked if Guardiola could walk away from Man City next summer, he told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “Absolutely not.
“He’s not only got one of the best strikers in the world but one of the best teams in the world.
“I can’t see him walking away. The relationship between him, the club, and the players is too strong.
“I’m very sure this contract will be sorted out as soon as possible. He seems to have settled in Manchester now.
“His job becomes a new one every season because of the new players and the new challenges ahead of him.
“I think that’s what keeps him driven. I don’t think he’ll want to leave the set-up he has at Man City behind.
“All he will want to do is win more and more trophies and Champions Leagues. He’s perfect for them.”
