Barcelona’s financial issues are no top secret. The Catalan club have been in a bothersome issue due to their inflated wage bill and it could land them in more trouble in the near future.
According to Isaac Fouto on COPE, Barcelona’s current wage bill stands at around €600 million and they are in desperate need to bring it down to €400 million.
As things stand, Barça are set to exceed their salary limit for next summer and in such a case, according to new La Liga rules, the Catalans will only be able to spend 40% of their savings. It means that for every €10 that the club saves, they would only be able to spend just €4.
So, for Barcelona to escape the new Fair Play measures, the club need to lower their wage bill from €600 million to €400 million.
The report further indicates that if the Blaugrana exceed the salary limit for more than one season, they could be prohibited from signing players for more than one year.
Such a move could prove to be disastrous for the team, especially considering that Xavi’s project is still in the construction stage and Barcelona need to reinforce the squad in the near future.
Gerard Pique’s retirement recently will help the club to an extent given the massive wages he was on while Sergio Busquets’ potential exit in the summer, when his contract expires, would be another step in the right direction for the club from a financial viewpoint.
It has also been reported that Barça are trying to negotiate salary reductions with Marc-Andre ter Stegen and Frenkie de Jong as well, while the La Liga leaders will also look to offload Jordi Alba in the summer.
Either way, Barcelona find themselves in a precarious position with regard to the Fair Play. And failure to bring down their wage bill within the limit for more than one season could end up with them being handed a ban on signing players.
