Mauricio Pochettino reveals main reason he was snubbed by Man Utd as successor to Ralf Rangnick

Former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino believes his failure to land the Manchester United manager’s job in the summer purely came down to a matter of timing.

The Argentine has come close on several occasions to taking over the Old Trafford hotseat but missed out again as Erik ten Hag was handed the task to rebuild United and make them title challengers again.

Pochettino was coveted by legendary Red Devils boss Sir Alex Ferguson in the past. He was then in the running again to succeed Ralf Rangnick over summer, only for United to turn to Dutchman Ten Hag instead.

The 50-year-old has been out of work since he was sacked by Paris Saint-Germain. And he is currently biding his time before making a return to management.

Earlier this week, Pochettino was coy on the possibility of one day managing the England national team. However, admitted he is open to the idea of one day taking that role.

He told The Athletic: “Of course, my relationship with England has always been very good.

“We have a very good relationship with the academies, trying to develop young players for the national team.

“I feel so comfortable here. You never know what happens. I am open to everything.”

Pochettino confident United role will come again

As for the United job, Pochettino still believes something could happen in the future after admitting that last summer the timing was just not right.

He told Radio Marca: “Soccer is ‘timing. These are the moments for it to coincide and for that marriage to happen. Sometimes it’s just a matter of time.

Ten Hag’s United currently sit fifth in the Premier League table. And while they are already 11 points behind table-topping Arsenal, the Red Devils are only three points off the top four and have a game in hand on fourth-placed Tottenham.

They are not back in action, however, until December 21 when they host Burnley in the Carabao Cup.
