Speaking to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona superstar striker Robert Lewandowski has revealed that he desires to play with Blaugrana legend Lionel Messi before he retires.
Lewandowski joined Barça this past summer and has already become a fan favourite at Spotify Camp Nou. His performances have been critical to the Catalans’ occupying the top spot in the La Liga standings.
The 34-year-old signed a contract with Barcelona that runs until the summer of 2026 with an option for an additional twelve months, meaning he will be staying at the club for a few more years.
And, Lewandowski has now claimed that he would like to share the field with Barça legend Messi, who has been heavily linked with a return to the club ahead of next season.
The Poland captain described how Messi operates more as a playmaker now and it would be a dream for any striker to share the pitch with him.
“It’s not up to me. Of course, we see that now he plays more like a playmaker, maybe he scores less goals and gives more passes to his teammates, but he still scores them. But compared to other times, he is now the player that any striker would dream of playing alongside,” Lewandowski said.
Messi left the Catalan giants last year after his contract could not be renewed due to the club’s wage-budget issues. With his PSG contract expiring at the end of the season, rumours of a return to Barcelona have been doing the rounds a lot of late.
However, recent reports suggest that the 35-year-old has a verbal agreement to remain at PSG for another year. So, any potential team-up between him and Lewandowski at Barcelona does seem unlikely at this point.
While that might be unlikely, Lewandowski seems certain that Messi will win the Ballon d’Or next year after leading Argentina to the World Cup triumph earlier this year.
“Of course. There is maybe one more player playing for the same club but there is only one World Cup that decides who is going to win it this season and Leo is now in the top position for sure because of what he has achieved which means everything to him. Now he can enjoy it,” he added.
