FC Barcelona are enduring a busier January transfer window than expected, with the club reportedly in talks with multiple clubs over the potential sale of a few of their players.
Memphis Depay is one of the stars in contention to leave the club in the coming weeks. Although the forward has been primarily linked with a move to Atletico Madrid so far, Inter Milan have also popped up as a potential destination lately.
According to Fabrizio Romano, however, Depay has no desire to join Inter Milan this month. The forward, in fact, is prioritizing a move to Atletico Madrid, as he looks to take the next step in his career.
This comes in the midst of Depay’s lawyer denying the links to Inter Milan, amid reports that they were in talks with Barcelona over a potential swap deal involving the Dutchman and Joaquin Correa.
But it appears Depay is determined to join Atletico Madrid, who are desperately looking for attacking reinforcements, following the departures of Joao Felix and Matheus Cunha.
Felix raised eyebrows with his early January move to Chelsea on a loan deal. Cunha, too, has joined Wolverhampton Wanderers, effectively leaving Diego Simeone devoid of attacking options upfront.
Depay’s experience, coupled with his versatility up front makes him an ideal option for Simeone, in his bid to reinforce his options in the final third.
The Dutchman’s exit would bode well for Barcelona, too, as the club are desperately looking for fresh revenue, in their attempt to balance the books. Although Depay’s exit would not drastically alter the club’s finances, it may still help in terms of reducing the salary budget.
