Barcelona midfielder looking at other options as club yet to contact over renewal

According to journalist Roger Saperas, Barcelona captain Sergio Busquets is assessing other options on the table as Barcelona are yet to contact him to discuss their intentions with regard to a new contract for the midfielder.

The 34-year-old is in the final six months of his contract and will become a free agent come June. It has led to all sorts of speculations over his future.

A move to the MLS has been discussed, with Inter Miami said to have held initial discussions over a possible deal in the summer. Saudi Arabian giants Al Nassr have also made an attempt to sign him, although the Spaniard has turned down a big-money offer from them.

Meanwhile, Barcelona manager Xavi has been insistent on wanting to keep Busquets at the club for one more season.

While the manager’s intentions may be to retain his captain and first-choice pivot midfielder, the report states that the Catalans are yet to contact Busquets and convey their intentions regarding his future.

It has prompted the midfielder to look at and assess other options at the table.

The Blaugrana understand that it will be difficult to find a top-quality replacement for the veteran superstar. More so, given the fact that their hands will be tied due to the Financial Fair Play problems.

Even in case Busquets is offered a renewal, it would be a downward one with much lower wages than what he currently earns so that the club comply with the FFP regulations of La Liga.

But at least until now, Barça are yet to approach Busquets and his representatives to discuss their plans and intentions. It remains to be seen how things pan out in the coming weeks and whether the midfielder ends up renewing or leaving.
