Veteran midfielder Hector Herrera revealed he could see himself representing Mexico at the 2026 World Cup.
Herrera first debuted with El Tri in 2012, and has since established himself as an integral part of the team’s midfield. He’s recorded 10 goals in 104 games overall, inspiring several Concacaf trophies and two consecutive World Cup Round of 16 qualifications.
The player also formed part of the Mexican team that earned the Olympic gold medal in 2012.
Herrera is currently coming off his third World Cup appearance with El Tri, after playing an important role in the 2014 and 2018 editions of the tournament. And now he’s set his sights on 2026 too.
“Yes, of course [I see myself playing in the 2026 World Cup]," he exclusively told 90min. "I think it's a matter of thinking about it, setting a very clear goal and taking care of yourself to get to that World Cup as well as possible.
“It is true that the whole process is still missing but it happens very quickly and when you least expect it you are already there playing. You have to start now to take care of yourself and work, and do things well to continue being taken into account in the Mexican National Team.”
Though eager to play in the upcoming World Cup, Herrera explained it’s not about the numbers.
“For me it has always been an honor to represent the national team, especially in a World Cup. One, two or three, it is not a goal that says 'I want to play three, four, five mandatory World Cups.' I prefer to play the ones I have to play but do it well and be able to offer the best of myself for the National Team."
As one of three host nations of the 2026 World Cup, El Tri’s lead up to the tournament will look different. With the qualification secured, the Mexican national team will look to CONCACAF tournaments and friendlies to remain competitive, while players prioritize fitness with their individual clubs.
Herrera and the Houston Dynamo will kick off the 2023 MLS campaign on February 25 against FC Cincinnati, while Mexico return to action on March 23 against Suriname in a Nations League match.
