Man Utd have not included a key clause in their move for Wout Weghorst which Fabrizio Romano claims is done, and two higher profile strikers labelled ‘attainable’ have emerged as summer targets, per reports.
Once it became apparent Manchester United did not have the cash to splash this month, a cost-effective loan signing became the order of the day.
Dutch international Wout Weghorst emerged as a surprise target at the beginning of the week. The 30-year-old was on loan at Turkish side Besiktas from Vincent Kompany’s Burnley.
A move therefore required Man Utd to jump through a few hoops. However, according to Fabrizio Romano, the deal is now ‘complete’.
The trusted journalist reported the six-month loan deal has crossed the line after Weghorst completed a medical. The relevant documents ‘have been signed’.
The Athletic reported Man Utd will pay Besiktas a compensation fee of £2.5m for the trouble of having their own loan move cut short at the mid-way mark. Sky Sports claimed United will cover the entirety of Weghorst’s wages.
Weghorst will hope to make a similar impact to the one Odion Ighalo made when completing his own surprise loan to Man Utd in January, 2020.
Ighalo scored five vital goals in the cups and did enough to earn a permanent move to Old Trafford at season’s end.
However, Romano noted Weghorst’s loan deal does not contain an option to buy from Burnley.
As such, if the striker does impress and United wish to sign him outright, negotiations would have to start from scratch in the summer.
Man Utd chasing higher profile strikers for the summer
The Telegraph recently reported United’s budget in the summer could be severely restricted once again unless they sell both well and often.
In other words, United could be in a ‘one out, one in’ situation, with the club still understood to owe £307m in transfer fee instalments to other sides.
In the event United do sell well and are able to loosen the purse strings for Erik ten Hag, the Manchester Evening News have highlighted two higher profile attacking additions on the club’s radar.
Ten Hag is understood to ‘like’ Benfica’s Goncalo Ramos and Mohammed Kudus of Ajax.
Both were labelled ‘far more attainable’ by the piece’s author Samuel Luckhurst when compared to Harry Kane or Victor Osimhen.
