Manchester United confirm Weghorst signing, as striker vows to ‘give everything’ to the club

Wout Weghorst, Netherlands, 2021

Manchester United have confirmed the signing of Netherlands international Wout Weghorst, and the striker has vowed to “give everything” to the club.

It has been the worst kept secret in the Premier League that Weghorst is joining United. Reports over his move to Old Trafford have filled the media over the past few days.

He did little to quash rumours himself. Indeed, the striker, on his last appearance for Besiktas, appeared to bid farewell to the home fans after scoring.

Now, it has been officially confirmed that his loan to spell at the Turkish side has been cut short.

Manchester United have announced that Weghorst will be joining them on loan until June 2023.

The signing makes sense, following the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo. Indeed, since the Portuguese left, United have had just two senior striking options – Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial.

An injury to either of those players could have proved troublesome for United. As such, Weghorst will provide cover for the rest of the season.

The loan move to one of England’s biggest clubs is a massive opportunity for the Dutchman.

Weghorst ready to ‘give everything’

It is clear that he can sense what a big opportunity it is for him. Indeed, he has detailed his pride at being able to play for United this season.

“I feel privileged to be joining Manchester United. I’ve played against the club in the past and it’s a fantastic feeling to now have the chance to pull on the famous red shirt,” he said.

“I’ve seen United’s progress under Erik ten Hag this season and can’t wait to start playing my part in pushing the team towards its aims.

“Whatever happens in the next few months, I can promise to give everything to the club for as long as I am here.

“I thank everyone who has played a part in getting me to this stage, and now I am looking forward to meeting my new team-mates and getting involved straight away.”

Murtough happy to secure ‘consistent’ forward

The signing of Weghorst might seem a left-field choice. Indeed, the last time he played in the Premier League, he scored just two goals and provided three assists in 20 games.

However, his goals output at other clubs has been good, and that is something director of football John Murtough was looking for.

“Wout has a consistent goalscoring record across several European leagues, and his attributes will add a further dimension to our squad for the remainder of the season,” he said.

“We were also attracted by his strong personality and dedicated approach to football, which fits perfectly with the spirit that Erik is building within our squad.

“He has shown a huge desire to join Manchester United and be part of what we’re striving to achieve this season.”

All parties will hope that when Weghorst gets on the pitch, he manages to have a good impact for the club.
