Messi’s situation has not changed, will meet PSG officials to sign new deal – Romano

Lionel Messi became a hot topic at Barcelona yet again yesterday following Gerard Romero’s bombshell report suggesting that the attacker is not close to renewing his contract at Paris Saint-Germain.

But his reports have been refuted by media organisations across Europe. According to Fabrizio Romano, Messi’s situation at PSG has not changed at all and the attacker aims to continue in the French capital.

Messi even had a verbal pact with PSG in December over a new contract. There will be a new meeting between the two parties, which will decide the length of the contract.

As per Gaston Edul, another journalist, Messi’s current contract at PSG does have the option to extend for another year without having to renew his deal. But the two parties are currently contemplating whether they should come up with a new contract.

Messi, after all, is coming on the back of an excellent 2022 FIFA World Cup that saw him lead his country to their first title since 1986. Messi was subsequently voted as the best player of the tournament.

The Argentine’s performances in the World and indeed in Ligue 1 this season have skyrocketed his demand, with even Barcelona stepping up their efforts to bring the attacker back to Camp Nou.

MLS outfits such as Inter Miami are in contention to sign Messi as well, but it appears the attacker is determined to continue in the French capital.

PSG, for their part, are reportedly ready to provide the 35-year-old with economic bonuses in an attempt to convince him to prolong his stay at Parc des Princes. But that could come at the expense of Neymar, who has had a falling out with Kylian Mbappe and may depart the club at the end of the season.
