Erik ten Hag warns Man Utd rivals that Carabao Cup win is just the start for rejuvenated Red Devils

Man Utd Carabao Cup trophy lift

A joyful Erik ten Hag has given his reaction to Manchester United winning the League Cup, after a convincing 2-0 victory over Newcastle at Wembley.

This is the Red Devil’s first major trophy since they last won the competition in 2017, so the Old Trafford faithful have every right to be proud of their team and manager.

Casemiro opened the scoring in the 33rd minute, heading home a wonderful cross from Luke Shaw to give United a deserved lead. The Brazilian has been fantastic for Man Utd this season, so it was fitting for him to score today.

Then, just six minutes later, the Reds doubled their advantage through an own goal from Sven Botman. Marcus Rashford was once again at the centre of the action, though, as his shot deflected off the Magpies’ defender and into Loris Karius’ net.

In the second half, Man Utd generally sat back and allowed Newcastle to have possession, but excellent defensive performances from the likes of Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane ensured they kept a vital clean sheet.

Ten Hag: ‘this is just the start for Man Utd’

In response to the victory, Ten Hag, via Sky Sports, Ten Hag said: Yet again this evening, they had the right spirit.”

“It’s a very good spirit, they act as a team and fight, give everything.

“It was not always the best football, but it was effective.

On winning more trophies with Man Utd, Ten Hag added: “Firstly, you have to win the first one [trophy]. We will get a lot of inspiration from this, but also, more confidence that we can do it.

“We are still in a start to restore Man Utd to where they belong, which is winning trophies and this is the first one.”

Bruno Fernandes: ‘We want more’

Man Utd’s Bruno Fernandes has also given his reaction to the victory, adding that he wants to win more trophies with the Red Devils under Ten Hag.

Speaking to Sky Sports, via BBC Sporthe said:  “It’s an amazing feeling. We have been searching for this moment. Us the fans and clubs and all together, finally get our trophy and I think deservedly.

“It has been an amazing period, first trophy of the season but we want more it is not enough for this club, we want more and we need more because our standards demand more.

“For me it was about winning trophies and finally we did it. I am satisfied but I want more. I want much more.”
