The Premier League is world football’s single most followed league with domestic competitions in other countries perpetually struggling to catch up.
The English league’s wide broadcast network and easy accessibility is something La Liga wish to replicate to broaden their reach, and are taking conscious steps towards the same.
According to reports from MARCA, the Spanish League has taken inspiration from the Formula One world, which has burst onto the scene in recent years after the release of a detailed behind-the-scenes documentary on Netflix.
The show, ‘Formula 1: Drive to Survive,’ brought out stories of teams, players and engineers to the general public, thus establishing a deeper understanding and connection with fans. La Liga sees the approach to be tried and tested, and thus wish to replicate the process.
The news outlet adds that the Spanish league and Netflix have already issued a teaser for the documentary that will cover the events of the 2023-24 season. Needless to say, Barcelona and Xavi’s dressing room will also be widely covered in the same.
The Blaugranas are no strangers to having external cameras capture their preparation behind the scenes, for they released a documentary with Amazon Prime last year.
The series called FC Barcelona: A New Era largely focussed on how Xavi salvaged hope from a season that seemed lost after the departure of Ronald Koeman.
The teaser released by Netflix begins with the words “When the game ends, the story begins..,” indicating an in-depth dive into one of the most followed football leagues in the world.
One hopes that Javier Tebas’ idea flourishes and boosts the popularity of Spanish football, thus allowing clubs in the league to compete with their English counterparts in the transfer market.
