Liverpool ready to activate €25m release clause to sign creative midfielder also admired by Aston Villa

Las Palmas midfielder Alberto Moleiro

Liverpool have spotted an opportunity to add a new creative dimension to their midfield for a relatively affordable price, according to reports.

New ideas are needed in Liverpool’s midfield ahead of next season. Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are likely to leave, while James Milner is approaching the end of his contract too.

Even some of those who could stick around have been under the microscope for their form this season. That said, the position doesn’t need a complete overhaul, just a few minor tweaks.

Hence, it is the role Liverpool will be most actively looking to strengthen in the upcoming transfer window. In that regard, they have plenty of potential targets on their agenda.

One option that was initially linked with them back in November is Las Palmas star, Alberto Moleiro. This season, he has been one of the most creative players in the Spanish second tier.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Liverpool have not lost sight of Moleiro as a potential target. In fact, they are prepared to meet his €25million release clause, which would equate to somewhere around £22m.

Liverpool will be hoping, though, that Moleiro’s good form doesn’t lead to Las Palmas winning promotion (which they are currently on course for as league leaders). In that event, the report claims that the 19-year-old would be willing to stay with his current club.

Moreover, his release clause would increase to €60m (over £53m), making him more than twice as expensive.

For now, though, Moleiro remains an attractive opportunity for Liverpool. He is also a target for Unai Emery’s Aston Villa, who similarly would be willing to pay €25m for him.

There is also interest from Barcelona, who tried to get him to follow in Pedri’s footsteps last summer. Ultimately, the two clubs couldn’t settle on the finer details of the transfer.

Now, it is more complicated for Barcelona to be able to sign Moleiro. Hence, the focus could be on the two-horse race to bring him to the Premier League.

As things stand, Moleiro does not have any particular preference about his next destination. He simply wants to find somewhere he can keep developing, the report indicates.

Although his entourage could recommend Barcelona, nothing is decided yet. Therefore, his future is all to play for.

Do Liverpool need Alberto Moleiro?

Before bidding to meet his release clause, Liverpool must decide if Moleiro would be any more ready than existing options in their squad like Harvey Elliott, Fabio Carvalho or Curtis Jones.

Perhaps their priority should be bringing in a slightly more experienced midfielder, since they already have their own prospects.

But Moleiro is a player of potential, so he could also be worth investing in. From his perspective, though, joining a team like Aston Villa might be better if it means he gets more gametime.

This season, the number 10 has featured heavily for his current club. Indeed, Las Palmas have given him 29 appearances in the Spanish second division. In turn, he has registered eight assists.

It will be important for him to keep progressing at a similar rate, which means he will be weighing up his options carefully.
