Bayern chief addresses links with Chelsea star with Tuchel poised to raid former club for player he loves

Bayern Munich chief executive and former player Oliver Kahn has addressed rumours linking Chelsea’s Kai Havertz with a move to the Bundesliga club.

Former Blues boss Thomas Tuchel became the new Bayern manager last Sunday and is reportedly considering bringing several of his ex-players to the Allianz Arena this summer.

Havertz has the ability to be a top player on his day but has struggled for consistency this term, so a change of scenery may be exactly what he needs to get his career back on track.

Indeed, the Germany international has been forced to play out of position as a centre-forward under Graham Potter this season, who was sacked on Sunday following a 2-0 loss to Aston Villa.

Chelsea’s poor form has made it a frustrating season for Havertz, who generally prefers playing as a winger or as an attacking midfielder.

Overall, he has scored just seven goals in 27 Premier League appearances this term, with the Blues currently sitting in a disappointing 11th place in the table.

Havertz: ‘Never say never’

As mentioned, it’s all change at Chelsea at the moment with Potter being sacked and ironically, former Bayern Munich boss Julian Nagelsmann is the big favourite to replace him, despite links with Tottenham.

With that in mind, Havertz’s future may depend upon how he fairs under whoever takes charge at Chelsea next, but the links with a return to the Bundesliga are unlikely to go away.

Bayern chief executive Kahn has remained tight-lipped on speculation regarding Havertz, but refused to rule out a summer approach.

As noted by Fabrizio Romano, he said:  “It doesn’t make sense to mention it right now.

“As I said, our focus is fully on this season and not on future topics. We are not discussing new signings with Tuchel right now.”

Interestingly, when Havertz himself was asked about rumours linking him to Bayern, he also fell short of shutting down the speculation completely.

During an interview with Bild, the 23-year-old said: “Bayern are generally a huge club that it’s hard to say no to as a German player, but my personal goal has always been to play abroad at some point. In England or Spain.

“I had a very good relationship with him and am very grateful for everything.

“You never know what will happen in football. Everything can happen very quickly. Never say never.”
