Five Premier League clubs are competing for the signing of rising La Liga star Gabri Veiga, while Chelsea are making new plans to bid for a Barcelona attacker – all in Thursday’s Euro transfer gossip.
SPURS JOIN RACE FOR GABRI VEIGA
Tottenham have initiated their own pursuit of in-demand Celta Vigo midfielder Gabri Veiga, joining Liverpool, Newcastle and both Manchester clubs in a transfer battle.
That’s according to Atlantico, a source local to Veiga’s current club, which also reveals that AC Milan and Napoli are battling to take the Spaniard to Serie A instead.
Veiga has taken La Liga by storm in recent months after cementing his place in the Celta Vigo first team. A summer transfer is now expected, potentially to the Premier League.
Arsenal have been named as one of his dream destinations, but according to Atlantico, his five suitors in the Premier League are different. It is claimed that Man Utd, Man City, Liverpool, Newcastle and Tottenham are on Veiga’s trail and have confirmed their interest.
All of them have been linked with Veiga in recent weeks, seemingly apart from Tottenham, whose interest appears to be the most fresh (but not necessarily the most concrete).
To get their man, Veiga’s suitors will have to meet his €40million release clause, which equates to somewhere around £35.2m.
The report does not indicate which of the seven interested parties might be in the lead for Veiga as things stand. Clearly, he can keep his options open as he plots the next step of his career.
This season, the 20-year-old has made 26 appearances in the Spanish top flight, scoring nine goals. Although his contract with Celta Vigo is due to last until 2026, a €40m bid by any of his admirers will leave his current club powerless to keep him.
Man Utd are looking to add another creative midfielder this summer, while Liverpool are planning to invest in three new players in that territory.
Man City might need a successor to Ilkay Gundogan, and Newcastle will be aiming to improve their squad further after their ascent up the Premier League table.
Tottenham, finally, are looking for cover for the injured Rodrigo Bentancur, but will have some off-field vacancies to fill first.
Veiga will have to assess all of his options before committing to his next club, but he could have a chance of entering English football within the coming months.
