Legendary Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard was at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday to witness another disappointing performance, with the Blues drawing 0-0 with Liverpool.
Now, reports suggest the former England international, who was sacked as Everton manager in January, could be appointed as Chelsea’s caretaker boss until the end of the season.
Lampard was the manager of the London club for 17 months before eventually being replaced by Thomas Tuchel in 2021, but he would no doubt love a chance at redemption.
Graham Potter’s ex-assistant Bruno Saltor took charge of the Blues on Tuesday but admitted he had never even picked a team before.
After the game, Saltor said: “It was truly difficult for me to enjoy tonight. It’s been a really sad time but I’ve just been trying to focus on being the best version of myself to help the boys.”
As previously reported by TEAMtalk, Julian Nagelsmann is the current favourite to become the new permanent Chelsea manager, while ex-Barcelona and Spain head coach Luis Enrique is also being considered by the club’s hierarchy.
However, at this stage of the season, the Blues may find it difficult to appoint one of their favourite candidates, and this could potentially open the door for Lampard to make a sensational return to the dugout.
Lampard could get second chance at Chelsea
According to the Sun, Chelsea are ‘considering’ the idea of bringing Frank Lampard back to the club in an interim role until the end of the season.
The Blues, who sit 11th in the Premier League table but face Real Madrid in the quarter-finals of the Champions League next week, clearly need to appoint a more experienced head than Saltor as soon as possible.
When asked if he expected to be in charge for Chelsea’s trip to Wolves on Saturday, Saltor said: “As it stands I just expect to go home to rest and focus on hour by hour, day by day.
“The owner knows the staff are going to be as professional as we can. We try to represent this club the best we can. We know the standards here and what is demanded.”
During his time in charge of Chelsea, Lampard guided his team to one fourth-place finish, as well as an FA Cup final, before being sacked halfway through his second season.
At Everton, he took charge in a tumultuous period but managed to help them survive a relegation battle in dramatic style last term. Although, he ultimately failed on building on that this season.
While Todd Boehly would no doubt prefer to appoint someone like Nagelsmann or Enrique on a long-term basis, Lampard could definitely do a job in an interim role and would relish the opportunity.
