Manchester United are being tipped to replace David de Gea with a former Arsenal stopper, while Newcastle are in the mix to sign a prolific Mexican forward and Friday’s Transfer Gossip claims Tottenham and Arsenal could also miss out on an attacking midfield target.
UNITED TURN TO JUVENTUS STOPPER
Former Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny has emerged as a target for Manchester United in the summer as the Red Devils consider a major change at No.1.
Tottenham have been linked with the Pole in the past as they eye a successor to Hugo Lloris. However, Tutto Mercato adds that United are now weighing up the possibility of Szczesny replacing David de Gea at Old Trafford.
The reports states that Erik ten Hag continues to deliberate on a decision to either replace De Gea or keep him.
De Gea still fretting over United pay cut
The Red Devils want to reward the Spain international for his unwavering service and performances for the club, but things seem complicated.
De Gea recently rejected a proposal from United involving a substantial pay cut from his current salary. And while reports suggested that he could eventually sign an extension, the two parties are yet to make progress in their negotiations.
And with De Gea’s future still very much up in the air, that has led Ten Hag to line-up other options just in case.
While some of the targets linked are considered more as back-up options, Szczesny would arrive as an established starter and there is no way he would sign to become second choice.
That leaves United with a huge decision to make this summer. They either bow to De Gea’s refusal to take a pay cut or start a fresh and bring in a new No.1.
NEWCASTLE EYEING MOVE FOR FEYENOORD FRONTMAN
Newcastle United are being tipped to make a move for highly-rated Feyenoord striker Santiago Gimenez.
The 21-year-old has been in outstanding form for the Dutch outfit this season and his performances have caught the attention of a number of Premier League clubs.
And now a report from La Razon claims that the Magpies could make a move for the 22-goal striker this summer.
The forward has previously been linked with Aston Villa, with Unai Emery wanting to find a partner for Ollie Watkins in his attack.
However, Newcastle joining the mix is a blow for Villa, given that the Toon are more likely to be playing in Europe next season.
Gimenez is regarded as one of the best strikers in the Dutch league right now and his goals have guided Feyenoord to the top of the table.
However, if Gimenez does arrive it’s unclear what that would mean for Callum Wilson going forward.
The frontman has scored 10 goals in 26 games this season but has had his fair share of injury problems since arriving on Tyneside.
Indeed, the report adds that Mexican Gimenez is viewed as a partner for Alexander Isak in Eddie Howe’s attack.
TOTTENHAM, ARSENAL SUFFER BRANDT BLOW
Borussia Dortmund have reportedly offered a contract extension to attacking midfielder Julian Brandt, dealing a blow to Tottenham and Arsena’s hopes of landing the player this summer.
Brandt has enjoyed a fine season so far – chipping in with nine goals and five assists in 34 games in all competitions.
And now his efforts for the Bundesliga side could be set to be rewarded, with transfer insider Fabrizio Romano stating he has been offered the chance to extend his contract.
The 26-year-old‘s current deal expires in 2024, with Dortmund keen to avoid a ‘dangerous’ situation where he could end up leaving on a free.
Discussions are still taking place over the length of his contract and his salary at Signal Iduna Park.
And while the Germany international is open to moving to England, his preference is to main at Dortmund.
To that end, the Bundesliga giants are doing their best to avoid that scenario and are desperately trying to persuade him to extend his stay.
