Just minutes after Barcelona confirmed the imminent departure of Jordi Cruyff, Fabrizio Romano is reporting that the La Liga champions are closing in on appointing former midfielder Deco as their new director of football.
Barcelona are set for a major restructure in the coming weeks. Mateu Alemany will be departing on June 30 and on top of that, it has now been confirmed that Cruyff will also not renew his contract which expires at the end of the season.
With both director of football and the sporting director posts set to become vacant, the Blaugrana are already said to be finalising one of the appointments.
Deco, a former Barcelona midfielder, who currently operates as a football agent, had been tipped as the favourite to replace Alemany as the new director of football.
And, Romano is claiming that the former Portuguese international is now close to being named the new director at Barcelona.
The journalist states that talks are already at a very advanced stage and that the 45-year-old has agreed to 90% of the details of the agreement. He is now working to find a solution for the situation with his agency as he cannot continue to represent players once he assumes the role of the director at Barça.
Speaking of the former Chelsea ace, Barcelona president Joan Laporta had recently said: “Deco, who already works with us as the club’s representative in Brazil, could be the new director. In case he becomes sporting director, he would have to leave his agency.”
And it now appears to be only a matter of time before Deco is announced as the new director of football at Barcelona.
What will be interesting to see is whether the newly-crowned La Liga champions bring in another person for the position held by Cruyff or if Deco is assigned to handle both roles from July 1.
