Oriol Romeu is one of many players Barcelona are targeting as they look to find at least a short-term replacement for the departing Sergio Busquets.
Romeu, who has proven himself at the top level during his time at Southampton and Girona, has emerged as an option for Barcelona, as they look for a low-cost alternative to their top targets such as Joshua Kimmich and Martin Zubimendi.
According to Adrian Sanchez, Oriol Romeu is Barcelona’s preferred option as the Girona midfielder offers excellent defensive prowess. He is also quite experienced and offers leadership credentials, making him a viable option for the Catalans.
Barcelona have analysed the possibility of signing the Girona star, who is believed to have a €10 million release clause, ahead of the new season. They are looking to lower the player’s price tag, with Sanchez suggesting that the club may even include a player in the operation.
In light of Barcelona’s ongoing economic difficulties, the club are not in a position to pay any transfer premium, unless they manage to balance the books by getting rid of their unwanted stars.
Unfortunately for the Blaugrana, the likes of Ansu Fati and Ferran Torres have shown no desire to leave Camp Nou and want to continue at the club. It poses a major headache for the management, as they cannot sign any new players without selling existing players.
The same applies to Romeu as well, so it will be interesting to see what measures Barcelona take in order to facilitate the return of their former youth player.
Barça could hope to include out-of-favour players such as Nico Gonzalez or Sergino Dest in the deal, which will significantly lower the cost of the operation to sign Romeu.
