Inter Miami owner floats idea for Messi’s Barcelona farewell: “Because he deserves it”

Barcelona tried hard to re-sign Lionel Messi this summer for one last dance at the club after he had decided not to renew his contract at PSG.

But the Catalans were unable to bring him back due to multiple factors and eventually he ended up signing for Inter Miami.

While a return could not happen, Barcelona president Joan Laporta has repeatedly stated that the club are working on a tribute for their former captain, potentially once the new Spotify Camp Nou is ready.

It must be remembered that Messi left Barça in 2021 without really getting a chance to bid goodbye to the fans and that is something the club want to correct at the earliest.

And, now, Inter Miami part-owner Jorge Mas, has claimed that he is ready to do ‘everything in his power’ to ensure that Messi has a proper farewell at Barcelona.

The Inter Miami owner suggested a possible collaboration with Barça potentially in a friendly or a tribute match for the Argentina captain in the future, possibly once the new Camp Nou is ready.

“I don’t know if it will be with some kind of friendly or farewell match. They have the Gamper Trophy, but there will be something, hopefully when the new Camp Nou opens and we want Leo Messi to be able to say goodbye,” Mas said (h/t SPORT).

Ahead of Messi’s move to Inter Miami, there had been talks about the 36-year-old being loaned back to Barcelona for a period.

But Mas dismissed the possibility of such an idea coming to fruition, while insisting that he wishes to do everything capable to ensure Messi gets a farewell at Barcelona.

“No, this will not happen, but of course, he deserves his tribute there. And I will do everything in my power to facilitate and help to make it possible because he deserves it,” he said.

Messi has made a fine start to life at Inter Miami, having already scored three goals and set up one more in just two matches.

As for a tribute for him from Barcelona, it will certainly take place in the future but the specifics of it still need to be finalised.
