Newcastle transfers: Surprise Juventus development leaves Eddie Howe primed to move for top defender

Juventus appear to be ready to wave goodbye to a veteran star this summer in a move that will certainly be of interest to Newcastle boss Eddie Howe.

The Toon chief still wants to add more quality to his squad ahead of the club’s return to Champions League action, with an experienced centre-back high on his list of positional upgrades.

And that is where Juve star Leonardo Bonucci fits in, despite the fact the veteran Italian is now 36 years of age.

Bonucci has entered the final year of his contract in Turin and it appears that the Bianconeri have already decided that he is no longer regular starter material.

Indeed, the defender has been left out of the squad for the club’s pre-season tour in the United States.

Bonucci has reportedly received various offers and proposals in recent weeks, including from Newcastle, Sampdoria and clubs in the Saudi Pro League.

And Corriere dello Sport (via TMW) states how Bonucci may not join the Serie A giants for their pre-season tour to the US, instead staying in Italy to secure a move to a new club.

Bonucci unlikely to make Saudi switch

The 36-year-old remains desperate to play in next year’s European Championships so, to that end, a move to Saudi or the MLS makes little sense at this stage.

That then leaves the door open to European clubs and Newcastle in particular, with Howe wanting to add Bonucci to a centre-back mix that also includes Sven Botman, Fabian Schar and Dan Burn, although the latter is more of a full-back these days.

Bonucci has had a stellar career, winning multiple Serie A titles as well as Euro 2020 with Italy in over 750 career appearances for club and country.
