Just a while ago, Barcelona were dealt with a fresh injury setback as midfield mainstay Pedri was confirmed to have suffered a thigh injury.
The 20-year-old Spanish international is expected to be out for more than a month as a result, leaving a huge void in the Blaugrana’s midfield department.
It does not bode well for Barcelona given that Pedri acts as the creative hub of the team from the centre and is one of the most pivotal cogs in the side.
Indeed, the Catalans had suffered in his absence last season, and Xavi had been pushing to sign Bernardo Silva this summer to avoid a similar situation.
Giovani Lo Celso back on the agenda?
A move for the Manchester City superstar is no longer possible after he signed a new contract with the club earlier this week.
Giovani Lo Celso of Tottenham had been identified as an alternative for the Portuguese international, but recent reports had suggested that a move for him was also unlikely as Spurs were reluctant to let him leave on loan.
But, Javi Miguel of AS is now reporting that Pedri’s injury could compel Barcelona to look into the possibility of signing the Argentine midfielder.
The 27-year-old is experienced in La Liga thanks to his stints with Real Betis and Villarreal (loan) and would fit the profile of the player that Xavi is seeking.
Lo Celso is not a major part of Tottenham’s plans this season and as such, they could look to offload him in the final week of the transfer window, even on loan.
A lot will depend on Barcelona’s Financial Fair Play situation, though, as they are already facing issues with the registration of some of their players while Joao Cancelo is also expected to arrive imminently.
