In a huge development, Barcelona have decided to put veteran defender Marcos Alonso up for sale in the ongoing transfer window.

This claim comes from Gerard Romero, who states that the former Chelsea left-back is now on the market.

Alonso renewed his contract earlier this year

Barcelona signed Alonso only last summer, with the defender arriving for free after being released by Chelsea.

The 32-year-old was brought in as a backup at left-back but ended up playing as a left-sided centre-back quite regularly, with Xavi placing immense trust in the defender.

Alonso, due to Financial Fair Play problems, had signed only a one-year contract with Barça last summer.

However, the club negotiated and renewed his contract earlier this year, adding twelve more months on his deal to keep him at the club until 2024.

Alonso’s contract, though is yet to be registered, as is the case with several other players who signed new deals, along with the summer arrivals.

But, Barça are now reportedly ready to sanction Alonso’s departure before the transfer window closes.

The decision comes as a surprise given that Xavi has shown a lot of trust in Alonso, coupled with the departure of Jordi Alba earlier this summer.

Although, it must be noted that his performances in pre-season left a lot to be desired. On top of that, Romero adds that registering his new deal would take up €9 million of the club’s salary space, which has seemingly prompted this call.

Furthermore, there is another young left-back knocking on the doors in the form of Alex Valle.

The 19-year-old La Masia graduate was part of the pre-season tour of the USA and is likely to continue training with the first team moving forward.

It had been previously reported that Alex Valle’s time with Barça Atletic is done and that he would likely leave on loan if not included in the first team.

With reports now claiming that Alonso is for sale, the Blaugrana will need a left-back to provide cover for Alejandro Balde and Alex Valle could end up benefitting from the move.
