Barcelona set to register veteran Spanish defender by next week

With Barcelona’s La Liga opener against Getafe merely hours away, the Catalans have seemingly gotten the bulk of their players registered in time ahead of their season kicking off.

Three Spaniards, in Marcos Alonso, Inaki Pena and Inigo Martinez, are the players who are yet to be made eligible to play.

However, Barcelona assure them that they will be registered very soon – with no particular rush on Inigo Martinez, as he is still recovering from his injury.

Barcelona count on Alonso

The Catalans seem to rely on the former-Chelsea man to remain available for the 2023/24 season, in order to add defensive depth to the squad.

Reports from SPORT suggest that the club’s coaching staff want to hang on to him for his versatility at the back, as the Spaniard can slot in at left-back or play in central defence.

Corroborating reports earlier during the weekend, it now seems confirmed that Alonso will, indeed, not play against Getafe.

Despite this, he is reportedly being assured that he is still being counted on amid the rumours of a departure and the decision to not register him this week had been communicated to him well on time.

Alonso renewed his deal with Barcelona at the beginning of the year after convincing the club with his professionalism, initially accepting one of the lowest salaries in the side.

That is not to say that he is non-transferrable if a significant offer arrives – as is the case with many other players. So far that is not the case.
