According to journalist Javi Miguel, Barcelona are planning to add a more defensively inclined right-back mostly because they already have an attacking profile on the left in the form of Alejandro Balde.
As it turns out, this is exactly why the name of Villarreal full-back Juan Foyth is starting to gain momentum. However, the likes of Joao Cancelo and Ivan Fresneda have still not been ruled out.
Villarreal are a tough nut to crack
Barcelona’s interest in Foyth is certainly not new. The team from Catalonia have tried to sign the Argentina international in the past, but Villarreal are sticking to the fact that Barcelona need to trigger the player’s termination clause, which is €54.6 million. They are not willing to even listen to the offers that are below the figure.
The La Liga team has generated enough income through players’ exit this summer that they no longer need to sell Foyth now. As far as the player is concerned, he is certainly not worried about the move.
It is said that the right-back will not ask Villarreal to negotiate with Barcelona. Although he is aware of the interest, which indeed excites him, he respects his excellent relationship with Villarreal enough not to ask for the transfer.
What are Barcelona’s options?
Foyth happens to be one of the three candidates that Barcelona plan to audition for the right-back role. This includes Manchester City’s Joao Cancelo and Real Valladolid’s Ivan Fresneda.
As far as the Portuguese is concerned, it is said that a fee of €45 million would be enough to close the transfer. However, if what Javi Miguel is reporting is true, Cancelo would not fit the plan as his profile is similar to Balde’s.
Fresneda, on the other hand, is still lacking in experience and Barcelona do not intend to pay his €20 million release clause, given that he only burst onto the scene last season.
