Having signed Ousmane Dembele from Borussia Dortmund sensation for €105 Million back in 2017, Barcelona are now set to bid the player farewell, following PSG’s activation of his private release clause.
Prior to the expiration of Dembele’s €50 million release clause on July 31, PSG formally wrote to Barcelona to ensure that a “private” clause was activated allowing the club to buy the forward for the same price.
Barcelona’s minimal economic benefit
Despite previously affirming commitment to the Barcelona project as he claimed his biggest desire was to reinstate success in the Champions League, the Parisians’ lucrative economical proposal prompted the player to jump ship.
While Barcelona fought relentlessly to convince the Frenchman of continuing with Barca next season, the player complied with PSG’s demands as his €50 million release clause was activated.
According to Catalunya Radio, Barça will gain around €20m in financial fair play with Dembélé’s departure.
In addition to Dembele and his agent reserving a portion of the sale’s percentage, Barcelona’s aspirations to create wiggle room in the wage bill has seen them obtain a much lower sum.
Players, administrators, and supporters of Barcelona who had hoped to see Dembele represent Xavi Hernandez’s team for the upcoming season have undoubtedly been left with a very poor impression of the situation.
Reinvesting in the team
Although Barcelona have not made a fortune through Dembele’s sale, the Blaugrana proceed to eye replacements in the market.
A right-back to support Raphinha has been put up on the table, while links with Bernardo Silva remain ever-present.
With Kessie also closing in on a departure to Al-Ahli, it is likely that the Catalans will use that economic gain to scour the market to make up for Dembele’s absence.
