Barcelona’s 16-year-old wonderkid set for Spain call-up after meeting with officials

Barcelona teenage prodigy Lamine Yamal is enjoying a dream start to the season.

The 16-year-old La Masia prospect made his first-team debut towards the end of the last season and has since made rapid strides.

After impressing in the pre-season tour of the USA, the teenage forward is now a full-fledged first-team member under Xavi Hernandez and even made his first start for the club against Cadiz this past weekend.

Now, Yamal is all set to achieve yet another milestone in his fledgling career, with a call-up to the Spanish national team on the horizon.

Yamal to be fast-tracked to Spain senior team

Indeed, MARCA is reporting that Yamal is all set to be called up by Spain manager Luis de la Fuente for the upcoming UEFA Euro 2024 Qualifiers in early September.

Only earlier today, it was speculated that there would be a chance that the 16-year-old attacking prodigy could earn a surprise call-up and it now seems set to become a reality.

Now, Yamal’s inclusion in the squad list for La Roja’s upcoming matches against Georgia and Cyprus appears to be locked in.

This development comes after the 16-year-old had a meeting with two officials from the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) earlier today.

Indeed, Francis Hernandez and Vicente Blanco travelled to Barcelona and held a meeting with Yamal and his family and explained the roadmap and plans that the Federation has in place for him.

This was, in part, done to stave off the overtures from Morocco, who are said to be keen on luring Yamal to represent them on the international stages.

Spain do not want to lose such a special talent and wish to ensure that he plays for them at the international level and after positive discussions with Yamal and his family, the youngster appears all set to be called up by De la Fuente.

If Yamal ends up featuring for Spain in either of those games, he could become the youngest player ever to feature for La Roja, beating the record held by Barcelona teammate Gavi.
