Aston Villa were drawing up big plans to bid for Juventus winger and supposed Liverpool target Federico Chiesa during the summer transfer window, a report has revealed.

It was a busy summer in the transfer market at Villa Park, including the additions of Youri Tielemans, Pau Torres, Moussa Diaby, Nicolo Zaniolo and Clement Lenglet. But it has now emerged that they almost attempted the signing of Chiesa too.

According to the Italian version of Goal, Aston Villa were considering a €70m (£60m) swoop for the Italy international while the window was still open. At that price, he would have become the club’s record signing, surpassing the recent €55m deal for Diaby.

However, it does not seem they ever went as far as submitting the bid formally. It was merely an idea they were giving serious thought to.

Now, though, they might have missed out on Chiesa’s services. The report claims that Juventus will discuss a new contract with the 25-year-old by the end of the calendar year.

As things stand, he is due to become a free agent in the summer of 2025, per the terms of the arrangement he signed when his loan from Fiorentina became permanent in 2022.

Chiesa has scored 24 goals from 97 appearances for Juventus either side of a serious injury that threatened to undo his progress.

Liverpool links played down

He has never played in the Premier League before, but has long been linked with clubs like Liverpool. According to Goal, though, the Reds never made an approach for Chiesa this year, even though he could have been a ready-made replacement for Mohamed Salah.

As things stand, it looks likely that Chiesa could prove to be out of reach for his English suitors by the time the next transfer window comes around in January.

From his first three outings in Serie A this season, Chiesa has scored twice, indicating that a strong season could be in store for Enrico’s son.
