Major Jadon Sancho development brings big ramifications for Man Utd exit in January

Man Utd winger Jadon Sancho

A major development in Borussia Dortmund’s January pursuit of Manchester United winger Jadon Sancho has emerged.

Sancho’s future at Old Trafford is under a cloud. The 23-year-old was left out of Man Utd’s most recent clash with Arsenal due to what Erik ten Hag suggested was a dip in standards in training.

Sancho hit back at the Dutchman on social media, claiming he was being scapegoated by the Man Utd boss. Sancho also claimed there are “other reasons” why he’s been singled out.

The breakdown in relations between manager and player has understandably prompted talk of a potential exit.

To that end, Al-Ettifaq were linked before the Saudi Pro League’s transfer deadline rolled around on September 7.

However, Steven Gerrard’s side ultimately opted against moving for Sancho, instead signing Demarai Gray from Everton.

One club within Europe who had been linked with ending Sancho’s Old Trafford nightmare is Borussia Dortmund.

Sancho rose to prominence with the German giant during a glittering spell between 2017-21. Sancho’s exploits at Dortmund helped earn a £73m move to United, though two years on the transfer has clearly not worked out for club or player.

As such, the Sun reported Dortmund were sizing up a January swoop, presumably via the loan route.

But according to a fresh update from German outlet BILD, Sancho will not be returning to Dortmund in the winter window.

Sancho salary too big of a barrier

Explaining why, BILD (as cited by talkSPORT) reported the significant issue of Sancho’s colossal wages will torpedo any negotiations.

Man Utd will reportedly demand the bulk of Sancho’s roughly £300,000-a-week salary be absorbed by any buying club.

However, Dortmund ‘do not have the funds’ to come close to taking on such a high salary and that is where the transfer will break down.

With a return to the club where Sancho thrived off the table, one of the winger’s likeliest exit routes has closed.
