Tottenham Hotspur have beaten five other top clubs to the signing of Croatian teenager Luka Vuskovic, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano

Tottenham are reportedly close to signing highly-rated Croatian teenager Luka Vuskovic from Hajduk Split.

Spurs have now taken another path after the departure of club talisman Harry Kane. Eight signings were made during the summer with the likes of James Maddison, Brennan Johnson and Micky van de Ven all arriving. Dejan Kulusevski and Pedro Porro turned their loans into permanent moves to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

And the north Londoners have made a bright start to the new campaign.

They sit second in the table after four games, with three wins and a draw to date.

New boss Ange Postecoglou has been widely praised for the style of football he is trying to play.

It seems to be paying off at present, with only champions Manchester City above them in the standings.

There is still a long way to go but early signs are positive. But far from resting on his laurels, the Australian tactician is looking to invest in further players.

The Lilywhites had been linked with Hajduk Split defender Vuskovic earlier this year while City were also thought to be keen.

The 16-year-old is one of the most highly-rated centre-backs in the European game.

And Italian journalist Romano has taken to X to reveal that it is all systems go.

“EXCLUSIVE: Tottenham are on the verge of signing Croatian CB top talent Luka Vuskovic,” he wrote.

“After top project for his development, Vuskovic only wants Spurs – despite interest from 5 more top clubs.

“Personal terms agreed, clubs finalising paperwork. Here we go.”

Tottenham triumph in huge Vuskovic race

Vuskovic has already broken records in his fledgling career, becoming the youngster player to feature in the Croatian top flight.

And, when scoring against NK Osijek, he became the youngest scorer in Hajduk’s history.

In addition to City and Spurs, Liverpool, Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain were known suitors for the Croatia Under-17 ace.

Personal terms are said to have been agreed at Tottenham and the clubs will finalise the paperwork over the January move.

However, the 6ft 4in stopper looks set to remain with his present club until he is 18. That means a possible arrival at Spurs in the summer of 2015.

Vuskovic made seven starts among eight HNL outings in 2022-2023.

He has yet to feature this term but will surely play a part as the campaign progresses.

He is a commanding presence at the back and looks tailor-made for the Premier League.

It may well be a few years before he is seen, however. But Spurs appear to have landed a real coup if they can complete the signing.

Reports suggest that Tottenham have only had to pay in the region of £12m to land the defender.

If things go to plan, he will be worth considerably more in a few years’ time.
