Barcelona were able to maintain their winning momentum this Saturday by securing a 3-2 comeback win over Celta Vigo.
But the Catalans received a major blow as Frenkie de Jong picked up an injury, which may keep him out on the sidelines until November.
De Jong’s injury comes at a time when Barcelona star Pedri is also recovering from his knock, leaving Xavi with limited options in the middle of the park.
Barcelona’s midfield options in the coming period
A recent report from Diario SPORT has offered a list of midfield options available at Xavi’s disposal following the injury of de Jong.
The list includes stars such as Ilkay Gundogan, Gavi and Oriol Romeu, three other crucial midfield outlets for Xavi.
Apart from them, Barcelona have Joao Felix. The Portuguese international can operate in an interior or an advanced midfield role, though that will force Xavi to deploy Gundogan in a defensive position.
Another option is Sergi Roberto, who could be a handy option due to his experience while Fermin Lopez is a younger alternative.
Wild cards for Xavi
Apart from these midfield options, Barcelona coach Xavi Hernandez has a few wild card options at his disposal.
One of them is Joao Cancelo, whose tactical flexibility has been used expertly by Xavi so far this season.
Cancelo, therefore, is a viable option in the middle of the park. Another option is Marc Casado, who is considered one of the promising young midfielders in the academy.
Casado had made his professional debut at Barcelona last season and the youngster could be prepared to take his game to the next level.
Finally, Ferran Torres could be an option for Xavi, although given the way the Spaniard has performed in front of goal, the Barça coach would prefer him in attack.
