4 goals in 9 games: Barcelona forward has turned things around after last season’s struggles

Robert Lewandowski’s unavailability for the upcoming games, which includes the El Clasico against Real Madrid, now opens the door for other players to get their chances at Barcelona.

And even though Joao Felix could be tried as a centre forward, Xavi is very likely to turn to Ferran Torres as his frontline option to replace Lewandowski if a report from Mundo Deportivo is to be believed.

A turnaround in fortune

When considering Barcelona’s squad dynamics and performance, Torres stands out as the player whose fortunes have undergone a remarkable transformation.

The former Manchester City forward’s journey has seen a significant shift from a limited role in the team last season and being frequently mentioned in transfer rumours last summer to becoming a pivotal figure in Xavi’s tactical plans.

The 23-year-old has four goals to show for already this season from nine matches, as many as he had netted in the previous 32. The Spaniard is scoring at a rate of one goal every 88 minutes or so.

At this moment, not only is Torres scoring goals, but he also happens to be one of the fittest players on the roster.

Despite getting irregular minutes at the beginning of the season, he managed to score a goal against Cadiz, Villarreal, and Real Betis. Recently, the 23-year-old also scored a winner against FC Porto in the UEFA Champions League.

Torres has been consistent since pre-season

The young forward has not only showcased his goalscoring prowess during the league season but he was also equally apt during the pre-season.

He emerged as Barcelona’s top scorer in the summer friendlies before going on to secure a double against Cyprus while playing for Spain.

This remarkable performance is attributed to a profound shift in his mindset. Unlike the previous year when he struggled in pre-season due to an injury, this time around, he was determined to stay at the club and worked diligently to prove his value.

He did not listen to any offers and instead focused on proving his worth to the team. Through rigorous physical and mental preparation, the 23-year-old understood that he could deliver his absolute best and Barcelona are now reaping rewards.
