When Robert Lewandowski was taken off with a knock against FC Porto, it was seen as a blow for Barcelona in their bid to secure all three points at Estadio do Dragao.
But, only ten minutes later, the man who had replaced the Poland captain, Ferran Torres, found the back of the net to hand Barça the lead and the victory against the Portuguese giants.
It has been the running theme of the season for Torres who has made an impact almost every time he has come off the bench in matches.
And, it does not come as a surprise that he is currently the Blaugrana’s second-highest goalscorer for the season, behind Lewandowski.
Speaking to the media after the game, Torres explained his mentality entering into matches, as he stated that it is imperative that he make the most of every chance he gets.
“It’s very expensive to play for Barça and I’m going to take advantage of every minute I have,” said Ferran, as quoted by SPORT.
Given that Porto are the toughest opponents in Barcelona’s group, it was always going to be a difficult and important match at Estadio do Dragao.
And, Torres stressed on the importance of the victory that the La Liga champions were able to eke out, saying:
“Before the game, we had talked about the fact that more than half of the qualification was dependent on winning on this pitch. It was a win that we had to get. We showed that we are good on the ball, but that we can also be tough without it.”
It was far from a vintage performance from Barcelona, though, and Porto had their fair share of chances. But, ultimately, the Catalans capitalised on an error from the home team, which proved to be the difference on the night.
“Football is also about taking advantage of mistakes by our opponents. We couldn’t counter their pressure, but the important thing was the win,” Torres concluded.
