Barcelona’s interest in signing Giovani Lo Celso is no secret. In fact, there was a time when the Argentina midfielder was close to making a loan move to Barcelona in the summer, but the transfer never materialized.
Even after the end of the transfer window, Barcelona have continued to track the Tottenham Hotspur midfielder.
However, if a report from SPORT is to be believed, the Blaugrana might have to give up on their chase as the 27-year-old is not moving from the London club anytime soon.
Now, it is important to understand that Barcelona’s interest in Lo Celso only surfaced when they failed to land Bernardo Silva.
Barcelona wanted to take advantage of the situation as the midfielder was particularly content with his situation at Tottenham, with Xavi a huge admirer of the Argentine.
So what happened now?
It is imperative to note that in just a matter of weeks, the player landscape underwent a dramatic transformation under Ange Postecoglou at Tottenham.
The Australian manager has begun to place his trust in the Argentine midfielder as he is slowly getting the responsibilities that had previously eluded him.
As it stands, the prospect of Lo Celso’s departure from Tottenham appears increasingly unlikely, unless a substantial financial offer materializes. Given Barcelona’s current financial predicament, such an offer seems extremely unlikely.
In fact, the club’s sports management has already instructed those handling the finances to keep an eye on more realistic targets that align with the club’s sporting and financial parameters, all under the watchful guidance of Deco.
At the moment, Barcelona’s midfield seems pretty covered. While there are a couple of players reeling with injuries, the likes of Ilkay Gundogan, Gavi, Oriol Romeu, and even Fermin Lopez are absolutely apt.
Now, Lo Celso’s presence wouldn’t have hurt Barcelona as it would have only strengthened their bench strength, but as of today, if they really want to put their heads into it, they might have to look for alternatives in January.
