Leicester City History

Leicester City was founded as Leicester Fosse in 1884 and joined the Football Association in 1890. They were elected to the Football League Division Two in 1894. The Foxes made their First Division debut in 1908, however, their stay was brief, lasting just one season. They suffered their worst-ever loss, a 12-0 defeat against Nottingham Forest, in that inaugural top-tier season.

In 1919, the team was reorganized and renamed, Leicester City as we know it today. In 1925, Leicester won the second division title, and just a few years later in 1929 finished as runners-up in the top tier by just one point behind Sheffield Wednesday. The ’30s however had the Foxes yo-yoing between the top two divisions.

After World War II, Leicester were runners up in the FA Cup on four occasions, once in 1949 and three further times in the 1960s.

However, they did capture the first of their three League Cup titles in 1964.

From the club’s inception all the way to 2008 they played in the top two tiers of the English game. However, in 2008, Leicester dropped to the third division for the first, and do date only time in club history.

This disaster however set up one of the greatest underdog sports stories of all time. In 2008-09, they would win League One and find themselves back in the Championship after just one season. Under the ownership of Thai businessman Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha, the club would undergo a remarkable rise. Five years on, they’d lift further silverware, winning the Championship and earning promotion back to the Premier League for the first time since 2004.

Seven wins in their final nine games in the 2014-15 season secured safety in the EPL for Leicester setting up the unbelievable follow-up campaign.

Triumph and Tragedy

Claudio Ranieri was brought in as manager, and behind the magical season of Jamie Vardy, Leicester became arguably the most unlikely champions of a major league ever. Betting odds for Leicester as champions were at 5,000-1 before the season began. They became just the seventh club to win the Premier League and gave hope to every small club everywhere that, just maybe, miracles can happen.

The joy of the title was snuffed out only a few years later when tragedy hit the club. Owner Srivaddhanaprabha and four others were killed when their helicopter crashed just outside the King Power Stadium in October 2018, shortly after a match versus West Ham.

Leicester would go on to win the FA Cup for the first time in 2021. However, just two seasons later, an 18th-place finish dropped them back into the Championship for the first time in a decade.
