The summer transfer window earlier this year saw Barcelona scour the market for a replacement for former captain and club legend Sergio Busquets.
A number of names were looked at as possible candidates but ultimately Oriol Romeu was the one who arrived, with the Catalans spending just around €4 million on his signing from Girona.
However, plans are already in motion to further reinforce the pivot midfield position in the near future. No signing will be made in that area in January but there will likely be a new reinforcement in the summer.
Xavi still likes Martin Zubimendi
SPORT is now reporting that Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez still likes Real Sociedad midfield ace Martin Zubimendi and wants the club to make an effort to try and sign him next summer.
Zubimendi was one of the top targets to replace Busquets at Barcelona this past summer, but his contract renewal with La Real and the €60 million release clause meant that he was out of the Catalans’ reach.
But Xavi still has his eyes on Zubimendi and sees him as a key part of the puzzle for the future, and as such, would like the club to make an effort to try and sign the Spanish international in 2024.
Move unlikely
However, the report further states that the club’s plans seem unlikely to go down the Zubimendi route.
It is claimed that sporting director Deco is combing the market for a young player, who already has some experience at the highest level and who has unquestionable progression.
A number of names have already been listed as possible options and a consensus between the sporting department and the coaching staff must be arrived at before the club can decide to make a move.
