27-year-old Barcelona defender playing through injury, has lost his starting spot to Inigo Martinez

Over the last few gameweeks, Xavi has played around with the starting lineup a fair bit, experimenting with three centre-backs, a false 9, an inverted left-back, and even twin strikers up-top, like against Real Madrid.

Alongside this, Xavi has also shuffled the personal around. Oriol Romeu has been dropped after starting several games in a row to make way for Ilkay Gundogan in defensive midfield, for example.

The biggest change has to be Inigo Martinez’s entry into the starting lineup. The Spaniard has made a name for himself in central defence over the last few games, benching Andreas Christensen.

The Danish international was an undisputed starter for Xavi last season, but his inconsistent displays have left a lot to be desired for Xavi and co.

He is currently experiencing his worst ‘moment’ for Barcelona, and was abnched against both Real Sociedad and Deportivo Alaves, and is currently behind both Ronald Araujo and Inigo Martinez in the pecking order.

Jules Kounde is also ahead of him given his ability to play as a right-back, and his brilliant form before injury.

Christensen playing with an injury?

Javi Miguel reports for AS, though, that Christensen’s entourage have repeatedly suggested that the player is playing with discomfort in his Achilles, but he continues to be called up for Denmark to play European Championship qualifiers.

However, it is imperative to note that Christensen has played ten games across the league this season, but has only played a full 90 in four of those games. He was also hooked around or before the 60th minute mark in three of those games.

Xavi has full trust in Christensen

All said and done, the report does confirm that Xavi has full faith in Christensen, and believes that the centre-back will recover his best form sooner rather than later.

The coach has praised him several times, saying that his signing was a personal bet of his, and that he is confident in his profile and ability to become a Barcelona great.

With a crucial part of the season coming up, Xavi will need all of his players fit and firing so that they can defend their La Liga title and go a long way in challenging for the Champions League.
