Barcelona set to face competition from Sevilla in free transfer pursuit of 26-year-old midfielder

Journalist Xavier Munoz has mentioned via Mundo Deportivo that Sevilla have entered the race to sign Barcelona midfield target Wilfred Ndidi and since his contract expires at the end of the season, the Andalusian outfit have made him their top priority.

During the month of October and the initial weeks of November, Ndidi, whose contract is set to conclude at the end of the season, suddenly found himself entangled in rumours linking him to Barcelona.

At the age of 26, his impressive displays in a rigorous league, albeit the English Second Division, captured the interest of several other clubs, and over the last few days, Sevilla have entered the race as well.

Barcelona want him but Sevilla have the edge

While the initial idea for Barcelona was to wait for him until the season’s end, Gavi’s season-ending injury has forced them to alter their January transfer market strategies altogether.

In the imminent future, securing a potential replacement for Gavi poses a considerable challenge.

There is no assurance that Barcelona will effortlessly address this situation, although there are players on their shortlist.

The possibility remains open that the club may explore options within its youth team to compensate for the absence of Gavi and instead go for a pivot midfielder in the summer, with Ndidi being an option.

But now, Sevilla have made Ndidi their top priority for the summer of 2024 and discussions are underway between the footballer’s representatives and Victor Orta, the sporting director of Sevilla.

He is enjoying life at Leicester

The Nigerian midfielder, who can easily transition into the centre-back role as well, is delivering impressive performances in the final year of his contract with Leicester and his noteworthy statistics include three goals and four assists.

Right now, he is valued at €18 million, but given his contractual situation, it would be safe to assume that any team willing to acquire his services in January will not have to go that far.

A player with his best years ahead of him and boasting of plenty of experience in the Premier League, Ndidi is bound to attract a lot of interest. Whether Barcelona make a play for him in 2024 remains to be seen.
