Former Barcelona youth team player, Alejandro Grimaldo has said he is aware that his former team did not show any interest in signing him during the summer even though the two were linked back in January.
As a result, he ended up joining Bayer Leverkusen, a decision that has worked wonders for him, having scored an impressive eight goals and six assists in 17 outings across all competitions.
Grimaldo was a promising star at Barcelona
Grimaldo was a highly touted prospect within the FC Barcelona youth ranks when he became part of the club’s youth system in 2008.
Despite his promising start, though, the trajectory of his career took a turn in 2015 when he was transferred to Benfica for just €1.5 million.
Over the past few transfer windows, speculation about a potential comeback to Barcelona lingered, but it never materialized beyond mere rumours.
While speaking about it, he explained that the reason why a move to Barcelona did not materialize was because the team had the position covered.
“Yes, I understand [that Barcelona did not show interest], because in the end they also have the position covered,” he told Ok Diario.
“They have very good players and the teams look for positions that are less covered. I perfectly understand. I went to Leverkusen and I am very happy, I am enjoying an incredible moment there and we must continue,” he added.
Position covered but concerns continue to linger
While it is true that Barcelona do have two options at left-back, namely Alejandro Balde and Marco Alonso, we have established before that Balde is yet to match his potential this season, having provided a solitary assist so far.
While there is a plausible explanation for that, the player, on a personal level, is discontent with his performance.
As it turns out, however, since he is not a part of the Spanish national team for the upcoming Euro qualifiers, the team from Catalonia is hoping that they could utilize this time to personally work with the player to help him regain his lost form.
