By this time, it is well-established that Barcelona are going to sign a new pivot midfielder either in January, if finances permit, or in the summer transfer window.
A number of players have been linked with a move to Catalonia as a result, starting with youngsters like Arthur Vermeeren and Gabriel Moscardo to a veteran star like Guido Rodriguez.
The Real Betis and Argentina midfielder has been on Barcelona’s radar for quite some time now and his potential free agency at the end of the season makes him an appealing target.
Real Betis to make one final attempt to retain Guido Rodriguez
However, SPORT is now reporting that Real Betis are set to make one last attempt to try and keep hold of Guido Rodriguez beyond the summer of 2024.
Indeed, Los Beticos wish to make one final contract offer for the World Cup-winning Argentine midfielder in the hope of convincing him to stay put at the club.
Betis CEO Ramón Alarcón has expressed a certain optimism that Guido Rodríguez will eventually accept a renewal offer that will tie him to the club beyond 30 June.
“We are in negotiations and the truth is that some days I think we are going to reach a good conclusion because we have a very important mutual respect for each other,” he said.
“On the other hand, there are other days when, seeing his level, you understand that he might have an option that he can’t refuse and he won’t continue with us,” the Betis CEO added.
Barcelona face Atletico Madrid competition
While Barcelona have held a long-standing interest in Guido Rodriguez, the Catalans face fresh competition from Atletico Madrid, who have also entered the race to sign the midfielder.
Atletico have stepped on the gas to reach some kind of agreement with Guido and avoid possible market interference.
While Betis are battling for Guido’s renewal and Atletico are pushing to tie down the Argentinian, Barça are still waiting for the financial situation to clear up and Fair Play to allow them to enter the market for such opportunities.
